Hardware Lead Engineer- Value Engineering
Embedded Hardware Engineer for Value Engineering team, focusing on cost optimization, lead time reduction, component standardization, and should cost analysis for HVAC product lines across globe. The ideal candidate will have a good understanding of embedded electronics and exposure to electro-mechanical components and experience in VE for embedded system. Detailed responsibilities include
Key Responsibilities:
- Review Requirements, Schematic and BOMs to identify value engineering opportunities for cost, lead time, SKU consolidation, and sourcing flexibility.
- Perform should-cost analysis at component, module, and system levels using BOM breakdown, benchmarking
- Analyze and improve existing hardware designs to support cost optimization, obsolescence mitigation, and supply chain resilience.
- Exposure to hardware lifecycle, including design, development, documentation, testing, and change management.
- Evaluate and implement alternate electronic and electro-mechanical components (e.g., RES/ CAPS, ICs , relays, transformers, contactors etc).
- Replace custom or high-cost unique components with standard, cost-effective equivalents without compromising function, manufacturability, or regulatory compliance.
- Evaluate & recommend modification to embedded systems using 8/16/32-bit microcontrollers, integrating both analog and digital circuitry inline to Cost optimization/Part obsoletion/ resolving manufacturing process .
- Support sustenance engineering activities such as component lifecycle management, redesigns, and supplier transitions.
- Contribute to compliance support, including UL/CE re-certification following design updates.
- Prepare and execute module/system-level test plans for modified hardware.
- Collaborate with sourcing team to validate cost assumptions and support Make vs. Buy decisions.
- Adhere to internal product development and engineering change processes and contributing to continuous improvement.
Experience Preferred:
8–12 years of Embedded hardware design and development experience, with exposure to value engineering or sustaining engineering roles.
Essential Competencies:
- Working knowledge of mixed-signal embedded system architecture, including 8/16/32-bit microcontrollers (e.g., PIC, TI MSP, ST), to support design evaluations and cost assessments.
- Good understanding of analog and digital circuit building blocks (e.g., op-amps, ADC/DAC, filters, power supplies) sufficient for cost driver identification and component analysis.
- Knowledge of electro-mechanical components such as transformers, relays, contactors, and fan controls.
- Understanding of product manufacturing process -PCB fabrication, PCB assembly (SMT, through-hole), testing, and final product testing and integration and cost associated at different level
- Ability to propose design changes (e.g., part reduction, standardization, integration, re-usability) that reduce cost without impacting performance/ user experience.
- Should-cost modeling (bottom-up, parametric), cost benchmarking, teardown analysis, and alternate part qualification.
- Good exposure to wire harnessing, connectors, and layout best practices, assembly methods at Control Box levels.
- Experience in supporting VE and component engineering, including BOM scrubbing, cost modelling & benchmarking, teardown and alternate part qualification.
- Basic commercial acumen to understand sourcing constraints, landed cost, MOQ, lead time, and lifecycle cost-implications in engineering decisions
- Proficient with schematic capture (OrCAD, DxDesigner) and PCB layout tools (Allegro, OrCAD Layout).
- Experience with MTBF/MMBTF estimation, and reliability evaluation.
- Knowledge of compliance requirements (UL, CE, REACH, RoHS) and supporting certification processes.
- Able to prepare test plan based on data sheets, application scenarios and execute the test plan .
- Well versed in using HW Equipment – Digital multimeter, DSO, LRC meters, AC/ DC Power supplies, Function generator etc.
- Experienced with version control and defect tracking systems.
- Strong in documentation/report out using MS office applications -Excel/ PPT ,
- Good to have knowledge of- SiliconExpert, aPriori and Costimator etc
