Job Summary
The L3 Backup Engineer (Commvault) is responsible for the design, administration, optimization, troubleshooting, and support of enterprise backup and recovery environments using Commvault Backup & Recovery solutions. The role acts as the highest level of technical escalation, ensuring data protection, backup compliance, disaster recovery readiness, and business continuity across physical, virtual, cloud, and hybrid infrastructures.
Key Responsibilities
Manage and administer Commvault backup infrastructure, including CommServe, Media Agents, and backup clients. Perform advanced troubleshooting for backup failures, restore issues, storage performance, and replication problems. Design and implement backup, recovery, retention, archiving, and disaster recovery strategies. Monitor backup jobs and ensure SLAs, RPOs, and RTOs are achieved. Configure and support backups for Windows, Linux, VMware, Hyper-V, databases (Oracle, SQL Server, SAP HANA, etc.), and cloud workloads. Conduct backup environment health checks, capacity planning, and performance tuning. Execute and validate restoration and disaster recovery tests. Manage storage integration including SAN, NAS, deduplication appliances, tape libraries, and cloud storage. Provide root cause analysis (RCA) for critical incidents and implement preventive measures. Develop operational procedures, technical documentation, and knowledge articles. Collaborate with infrastructure, database, cloud, security, and application teams for data protection requirements. Support audits, compliance requirements, and data retention policies.
Skill Requirements
Strong experience with Commvault Backup & Recovery administration and troubleshooting. Knowledge of backup technologies, deduplication, replication, snapshots, and disaster recovery. Expertise in Windows, Linux, VMware, Hyper-V, and enterprise storage platforms. Understanding of cloud backup solutions (Azure, AWS, Google Cloud). Familiarity with SQL Server, Oracle, Exchange, Active Directory, and file system backups. Knowledge of scripting and automation using PowerShell, Bash, or Python. Experience with ITIL processes, incident management, and change management.
