Mainframe IMS Database Administrator (IMS DBA)
An IMS Database Administrator (IMS DBA) should possess the following key skills:
Technical Skills
Strong experience in IMS Database Administration (IMS v13 and above).
Expertise in IMS database objects: DBD, PSB, ACB, and Format Definitions (FMT).
Administration of IMS Full Function, HALDB, Fast Path, and DEDB databases.
Proficiency in DBRC, database load, restore, recovery, and reorganization (REORG) processes.
Experience with database initialization, forward recovery, checkpoint/restart, secondary index creation, and pointer checking.
Strong knowledge of IMS utilities (IBM and BMC tools).
Familiarity with IMS exit points and custom routines.
Mainframe Platform Skills
Strong working knowledge of OS, TSO/ISPF, and JCL.
Experience with supporting technologies such as VSAM, CICS, and IMS DC.
Working knowledge of RACF security administration related to IMS environments.

IMS DBA – Key Responsibilities
IMS Database Administration
Administer and maintain IMS databases (Full Function, HALDB, Fast Path, DEDB).
Create, modify, and manage DBDs, PSBs, ACBs, and Format definitions.
Database Maintenance & Recovery
Perform database initialization, load, reorganization (REORG), backup, restore, and recovery activities.
Manage DBRC, forward recovery, checkpoint/restart processes, and disaster recovery support.
Performance Monitoring & Optimization
Monitor IMS database performance and availability.
Analyze and optimize database structures, access paths, and resource utilization.
Database Utilities Management
Execute and support IMS utilities (IBM and BMC tools).
Build and maintain secondary indexes, pointer checker, and database integrity processes.
Incident Management & Troubleshooting
Diagnose and resolve IMS database failures, performance issues, and application-related database problems.
Perform root cause analysis (RCA) and implement preventive actions.
Security & Compliance
Administer IMS-related security using RACF.
Ensure compliance with organizational security and operational standards.
System Support & Integration
Support IMS environments running on OS.
Work with TSO/ISPF, JCL, VSAM, CICS, IMS DC, and associated mainframe technologies.
Support IMS exit points, routines, and database interfaces.
Change & Release Management
Support change implementation, migrations, and production releases.
Participate in problem, change, and availability management processes.
Tools Administration
Utilize File Manager, IMSUTIL, DELTA IMS, and related tools for database administration and maintenance.
Documentation & Continuous Improvement
Maintain operational procedures, recovery documentation, and database standards.
Identify automation and performance improvement opportunities to enhance database reliability and efficiency.
