Job Summary

HCL Lending Solutions is seeking an experienced Mortgage Underwriter to support our strategic partnership with Bank of America, one of the nation's leading mortgage lenders. The Mortgage Underwriter is responsible for performing comprehensive credit, income, asset, collateral, and risk assessments on residential mortgage loan applications while ensuring compliance with investor, regulatory, agency, and Bank of America underwriting guidelines.

The successful candidate will review and analyze loan documentation to determine borrower eligibility and assess overall loan quality. Responsibilities include validating income calculations, evaluating creditworthiness, reviewing asset documentation, analyzing appraisal and collateral reports, assessing debt-to-income ratios, and identifying potential risks that may impact loan approval decisions. The underwriter will issue clear and concise underwriting decisions, conditions, and recommendations while maintaining adherence to service level agreements, quality standards, and regulatory requirements.

Working within a fast-paced mortgage fulfillment environment, the underwriter will collaborate with processors, closers, quality assurance teams, operations leaders, and client stakeholders to ensure efficient loan movement through the underwriting lifecycle. The role requires strong analytical skills, sound judgment, and the ability to interpret complex lending guidelines across conventional, government, jumbo, and home equity loan products.

This position plays a critical role in delivering high-quality mortgage fulfillment services and maintaining HCL's reputation as a trusted operational partner. The underwriter is expected to consistently achieve productivity, quality, and turn-time objectives while supporting continuous improvement initiatives, technology adoption, workflow optimization, and enhanced customer experience outcomes.

Ideal candidates possess a strong understanding of residential mortgage underwriting practices, agency guidelines, risk assessment methodologies, and mortgage regulatory requirements. The ability to work independently, exercise prudent lending judgment, and maintain accuracy in a high-volume production environment is essential to success in this role.

Key Responsibilities

The ideal Mortgage Underwriter candidate will have a minimum of 3 to 5 years of residential mortgage underwriting experience with demonstrated expertise in conventional, FHA, VA, USDA, jumbo, and home equity lending products. Prior experience supporting large financial institutions or mortgage fulfillment operations is highly preferred.

Candidates must possess strong knowledge of mortgage lending regulations, investor guidelines, agency requirements, credit risk analysis, income calculation methodologies, automated underwriting systems, and manual underwriting practices. A deep understanding of borrower eligibility determination, collateral evaluation, debt-to-income calculations, loan-to-value analysis, and fraud detection techniques is essential.

Skill Requirements

Key technical competencies include:

  • Review and interpretation of credit reports, tax returns, W-2s, pay stubs, bank statements, and appraisal documentation.
  • Ability to calculate and validate qualifying income for salaried, self-employed, commissioned, and variable-income borrowers.
  • Knowledge of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac guidelines and mortgage compliance requirements.
  • Experience with automated underwriting systems and mortgage origination platforms.
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and mortgage workflow technologies.
  • Ability to identify layered risk factors and make sound credit decisions.

Other Requirements

Required behavioral competencies include:

  • Excellent analytical and critical-thinking skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities while meeting strict deadlines.
  • Strong collaboration and stakeholder management capabilities.
  • Problem-solving mindset with a focus on continuous improvement.
  • Adaptability to changing client requirements, policies, and workflow processes.

Preferred qualifications include experience with quality control reviews, audit readiness, regulatory compliance programs, mortgage servicing considerations, workflow automation initiatives, and AI-assisted mortgage technology platforms. Candidates must demonstrate professionalism, integrity, sound judgment, and a commitment to delivering exceptional service in a highly regulated mortgage environment.
