Senior Design Lead
Japan
Job Description
Senior Design Lead
Isesaki Shi, Gunma

Job Summary

■Application Requirements (Essential)

・At least 5 years’ practical experience in automotive mechanical design or thermal management hardware design (including electromechanical systems)

・Experience participating in at least three mass-production projects

・Practical experience with CATIA (surface, solid, assembly)

・Practical experience in either thermal, structural or fluid analysis

・Experience analysing test results and applying the findings to design improvements

Key Responsibilities

■ Main Scope of Duties

・Design of ECH/ECCH enclosures, mechanical structures and cooling water circuits

・Compilation of requirements (such as operating voltage, heating capacity, flow rate, inlet temperature, operating environment and service life) and incorporation of these into design specifications

・Selection of heater elements (cartridge type, film type, etc.) and analysis of thermal resistance and temperature distribution from the heating elements to the cooling water

・Predicting temperatures in various components under conditions such as maximum output, low flow rate, zero flow and cold start, as well as determining the placement of temperature sensors and assessing overheating detection times

・Heat dissipation design for power devices (IGBTs, SiC, etc.) (including mounting plates, insulating sheets and thermal interface material (TIM))

・Busbar design (selection of shapes and materials taking into account current density, inductance and mechanical strength)

・Enclosure insulation design (ensuring creepage and clearance distances, selection of insulation materials, compliance with high-voltage safety requirements)

・Structural and strength analysis, taking into account internal pressure, piping loads, clamping forces, vibration and thermal expansion, as well as stress, deformation and fatigue assessments

・Analysis of pressure loss, flow velocity distribution, localised overheating, boiling and air entrainment in cooling channels, and measures to prevent freezing

・Verification and updating of analytical models based on actual measurement results, and design improvements

・Configuration review in collaboration with system engineers, and incorporation of functional safety requirements into hardware design

Skill Requirements

Desirable Qualifications

・Experience in thermal management design for power devices (clamping plates, insulating sheets, TIM, etc.)

・Experience in enclosure insulation design and compliance with high-voltage safety standards

・Experience in the design and analysis of busbar geometries

・Experience using thermal-fluid analysis tools (STAR-CCM+, Fluent, FloTHERM, etc.)

・Experience in cooling channel design (flow rate, pressure drop, freeze resistance, boil-off resistance)

・Experience in the development of thermal management components such as ECH and ECCH

・Experience in organising system requirements and addressing functional safety requirements
