Job Summary

Senior Software Engineer (Java/Spring, Payments) – 8–10 Years Experience

We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer with 8–10 years’ experience to develop and sustain critical enterprise payments applications for a major financial services client. This is a hands-on, client-facing role working on core payments platforms (e.g., EPODS, EPX) that process SWIFT and ISO 20022 (UPO) payment messages. The successful candidate will have deep skills in Java and the Spring Framework, building scalable, high-quality Spring Boot microservices and event-driven integrations using MongoDB, Kafka, and Red Hat OpenShift (OCP). Familiarity with Wells Fargo developer toolingsecure data transmission protocols, and CI/CD pipelines is required to ensure efficient delivery in a tightly regulated environment. This role is crucial to the continuity of a multi-year, business-critical initiative with an extensive roadmap, so a long-term commitment and excellent communication skills are essential.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design & Develop Microservices: Build and enhance Java/Spring Boot microservices that power the bank’s enterprise payments and SWIFT applications (EPODS, EPX). Ensure services are resilient, secure, and optimized for high throughput in real-time payment processing.
  • Payments Domain & Message Processing: Implement ISO 20022/SWIFT message transformations and UPO framework components, enabling translation of legacy payment formats (SWIFT MT) to modern XML-based MX (ISO 20022) standards. Develop features for data transmission between systems (EPODS↔EPX) ensuring compliance with industry standards and bank policies.
  • Integration & Deployment: Integrate microservices with MongoDB (for data storage) and Apache Kafka (for event streaming) to support end-to-end payment workflows. Deploy and manage services on OpenShift (OCP) for containerized, cloud-ready operations. Utilize client-specific dev tools (Wells Fargo’s internal toolchain, CI/CD pipelines) and follow established processes for code management, testing, and release.
  • Collaboration & Quality Assurance: Work in an Agile team (onshore/offshore), collaborating with developers, QA, and business analysts. Write unit and integration tests (Junit, Selenium/HyperExecute for UI & regression testing as needed) to maintain high quality. Participate in code reviews and troubleshooting to quickly resolve issues and ensure seamless system integration and minimal downtime.
  • Technical Leadership & Continuity: Contribute to technical design discussions, share best practices (especially around Spring Boot, Kafka, and microservices orchestration), and mentor junior team members. Given the long-term project scope (deliverables through 2027), ensure thorough knowledge transfer and documentation to maintain continuity and mitigate delivery risks.

Skill Requirements

  • 8–10 years of strong Java development experience, with deep expertise in the Spring Framework/Spring Boot ecosystem for building enterprise applications.
  • Payments & SWIFT Domain: Hands-on experience in banking/payments systems, particularly SWIFT messaging and ISO 20022 (MX) conversion projects. Knowledge of payment file formats and secure financial data handling (encryption, network protocols) is important.
  • Microservices & Integration: Proven ability to design and implement distributed microservices and APIs using Spring Boot, integrating with NoSQL databases (MongoDB) and messaging/streaming platforms like Kafka. Experience deploying applications on container platforms such as OpenShift (OCP) or Kubernetes for large enterprise environments.
  • UPO & Transformation Frameworks: Familiarity with Universal Payment Orchestrator (UPO) framework or similar payments transformation engines. Comfortable handling complex data transformations and mapping (e.g., mapping legacy formats to new schema) as part of modernization.
  • DevOps & Tooling: Well-versed in Wells Fargo’s developer tooling and CI/CD practices – including source control, code quality tools, automated build/test (Jenkins or similar), and release processes – to ensure adherence to client standards and accelerate delivery.

Communication & Leadership: Excellent communication skills and ability to work effectively in a client-facing role within a global team. Self-driven with strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and a commitment to enterprise software quality

Other Requirements

This role offers the opportunity to work on mission-critical financial applications and contribute to a major modernization program within a leading bank. It is ideal for a senior engineer who excels in both technological depth and payments domain knowledge, and who can drive results in a complex, regulated environment while ensuring long-term platform stability and delivery success.
