Job Summary

SRE L2 Engineer (Application Operations – Java / WebSphere / JBoss / Oracle)

Job Summary

The SRE L2 Engineer is responsible for ensuring the stability, availability, and performance of Java-based enterprise applications running on WebSphere/JBoss and Oracle databases.

The role focuses on L2 production support, advanced troubleshooting, and proactive reliability engineering, ensuring adherence to SLOs, operational KPIs, and user experience standards.

The engineer acts as a key operational bridge between application development, middleware, and database teams, driving reliability and operational excellence.

Key Responsibilities

Application Operations & Support

• Manage end-to-end application operations for Java-based applications hosted on WebSphere/JBoss

• Ensure uptime, performance, and stability of production environments

• Perform deployments, environment configuration, and release validation\\\\r\\\\n• Maintain seamless application runtime and infrastructure alignment ➡ Application Operations ensures cohesive runtime environments and uninterrupted service delivery

Incident & Problem Management

• Handle L2 incident troubleshooting for escalated production issues

• Own resolution of P1/P2 incidents within defined SLAs

• Perform deep-dive RCA for recurring issues and implement preventive fixes

• Support on-call rotation and critical incident management

Middleware Operations (WebSphere / JBoss)

• Administer and support: IBM WebSphere Application Server (WAS) or JBoss (WildFly)

• Perform: Application deployments (EAR/WAR files) Server configuration (JVM tuning, thread pools, datasource configs)

Cluster management and load balancing

Log analysis and troubleshooting runtime issues

• Monitor and optimise application server performance and health ➡ Java stack in the SRE TOM includes Linux, JBoss/WebSphere, and Oracle-based environments

Database Operations (Oracle)

• Work on Oracle database operations: Query troubleshooting and performance tuning

 Monitoring DB performance (locks, waits, execution plans)

 Supporting deployments involving DB changes

• Collaborate with DBA teams for complex performance or availability issues

Monitoring & Reliability Engineering

• Implement and operate monitoring/observability dashboards (logs, metrics, traces)

• Track application health KPIs (availability, latency, error rates, throughput)

• Support SLO/SLI adherence and reliability reporting

• Contribute to proactive incident elimination and improved MTTR ➡ SRE relies on observability, SLIs/SLOs, and performance metrics for reliability engineering

Automation & Continuous Improvement

• Develop scripts (Shell/Python/Ansible) to reduce manual operational effort (toil)

• Automate deployments, health checks, and recovery procedures

• Identify improvement opportunities and support continuous reliability enhancement

Collaboration & Documentation

• Collaborate with: Application development teams

Middleware and infrastructure teams

Database administrators

• Maintain: Runbooks, SOPs, and knowledge base articles

• Support architecture discussions for performance and reliability improvements

Skill Requirements

Core Technical Skills

• Strong experience in Java / J2EE applications

• Hands-on expertise in: IBM WebSphere Application Server (WAS) OR JBoss (WildFly)

Oracle Database (SQL, performance tuning, troubleshooting)

• Good understanding of: Linux/Unix environments

Application deployment and configuration

SRE / Operations Skills

• Experience in L2 Production Support / Application Operations

• Strong knowledge of: Incident, Problem, Change Management (ITIL)

Monitoring and observability tools such as Splunk

Performance and capacity management

• Familiarity with: SLO / SLA / Error Budget concepts

Reliability engineering practices

Soft Skills

• Strong analytical and troubleshooting mindset

• Ability to handle high-pressure production incidents

• Effective stakeholder communication

• Collaborative and proactive approach

Other Requirements

Experience & Qualifications

• 3–6 years of experience in Java Application Support / SRE / Production Support

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science / IT or related discipline

• Experience in enterprise-scale distributed environments preferred
