Job Summary
Network Reliability Engineering (NRE) Job Description Job Title: Network Reliability Engineer (NRE) Department: Infrastructure / Network Engineering Employment Type: Full-Time Position Overview We are seeking a Network Reliability Engineer (NRE) to bridge the gap between traditional network engineering and modern software development. In this role, you will apply a software engineering mindset to network operations, treating network infrastructure as code. Your mission will be to design, build, and maintain highly scalable, automated, and resilient network infrastructures. You will focus on maximizing network uptime, optimizing performance, and eliminating manual intervention through robust automation pipelines and proactive monitoring. Core Responsibilities • Network Automation & DevOps: Design, develop, and maintain automation workflows and CI/CD pipelines to deploy, test, and validate network configurations. • Infrastructure as Code (IaC): Treat the network as a software system, utilizing declarative configuration management tools to manage network state. • Observability & Telemetry: Build and manage comprehensive monitoring, alerting, and logging systems to track network health, performance, and capacity. • Incident Management & Blameless Post-Mortems: Serve as a tier-3 escalation point for complex network outages. Lead root-cause analysis (RCA) and implement automated fixes to ensure the same issue never happens twice. • Architecture & Scalability: Partner with traditional network architects to design self-healing, high-availability data center, cloud, and edge networks. • Performance Optimization: Define, measure, and drive adherence to Service Level Indicators (SLIs) and Service Level Objectives (SLOs) for network reliability. Required Skills & Qualifications 1. Software & Automation • Languages: Strong proficiency in Python, Go, or Bash for scripting and automation. • Tools & Frameworks: Hands-on experience with Ansible, Terraform, SaltStack, or NetBox. • CI/CD: Experience with Git, GitLab CI, GitHub Actions, or Jenkins. 2. Networking Protocols & Infrastructure • Deep understanding of core networking concepts: TCP/IP, BGP, OSPF, EVPN-VXLAN, and MPLS. • Experience configuring and managing vendor hardware/software (e.g., Arista EOS, Cisco IOS/NX-OS, Juniper Junos, or white-box switches running SONiC). • Solid understanding of cloud networking (AWS, GCP, or Azure VPCs, Direct Connect/Interconnect, and Load Balancing). 3. Systems & Observability • Proficiency in Linux system administration and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes). • Experience with telemetry and monitoring stacks (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana, ELK stack, Telegraf, or gNMI/gRPC). Experience & Education • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, or equivalent practical experience. • 3+ years of experience in a Network Engineer, DevOps, or SRE role with a heavy emphasis on network automation. • Relevant certifications (e.g., AWS Advanced Networking, Google Professional Cloud Network Engineer, CCNP, JNCIP) are a plus but secondary to proven coding and automation capability. Preferred Soft Skills • A \"softwarization\" mindset—an aversion to repetitive manual tasks and a passion for automation. • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical issues to both software and infrastructure teams. • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills under pressure.
