L3 Mainframe Communications / Network Engineer (z/OS)

About the Role

We are looking for L3 Mainframe Network Engineer to own and operate z/OS Communications Server networking across complex, multi-LPAR Sysplex environments. You’ll be the final escalation for TCP/IP, VTAM/EE, OSA/, Sysplex Distributor/DVIPA, and AT-TLS/IPSec—ensuring reliability, performance, and security for mission-critical workloads (CICS, IMS, Db2 DDF, MQ, z/OS Connect).

Key Responsibilities

· Be an architect for z/OS Communications Server for multiple customers

· Design, implement, and support z/OS TCP/IP stack configs: profiles, PAGENT (AT-TLS, IPSEC), OMPROUTE, VIPA/DVIPA, Sysplex Distributor, port sharing, and policy routing.

· Own SNA/VTAM and Enterprise Extender (HPR/IP) design and migration patterns; manage VTAM definitions and APPN nodes.

· Manage network security on z/OS: AT-TLS/IPSec, cipher policies, certificate use (with platform security team)

· Operate and tune TN3270E, FTP/FTPS/SFTP, SSH, Connect:Direct, CSSMTP, and other comms subsystems.

· Troubleshoot complex issues using packet traces, IPCS, SMF 119, NETSTAT, Comm Server traces; coordinate with enterprise Network/IAM/Security teams.

· Ensure high availability: Sysplex-aware routing, failover, capacity planning, DR readiness, and change reliability.

Required Skills & Experience

· 8+ years total IT with 5+ years in z/OS networking (Comm Server, VTAM/EE).

· Deep hands-on with: TCP/IP on z/OS, PAGENT (AT-TLS/IPSec), OMPROUTE, VIPA/DVIPA, Sysplex Distributor, OSA-Express.

· Strong in tracing: IPCS packet trace, SYSTCP* logs, SMF 119, zERT, z/OS Comm Server diagnostics, Wireshark (offloaded).

· Experience with NetView, SA z/OS,

· Solid knowledge of CICS IPIC/HTTP, IMS Connect, Db2 DDF, MQ z/OS Connect EE connectivity patterns.

· Scripting with REXX, JCL, basic shell on USS; change/incident/problem (ITIL).

Nice to Have

· Knowledge in z/OSMF

· Load balancing integrations (A10/F5) with Sysplex Distributor

· Certifications: IBM z/OS Networking, ITIL Foundation
