Job Summary

Senior Backend Developer responsible for migrating a mission-critical flight test application (FTCS) from legacy J2EE infrastructure to modern supported platforms. The role requires hands-on expertise in Java enterprise migration, database performance tuning, and application server configuration. The candidate will work across all migration phases including Oracle upgrade, RHEL migration, WebSphere to Liberty transition, and batch scheduler replacement.

Key Responsibilities

Migrate 108 EJB 2.0 session beans from IBM WebSphere 8.5 to IBM Liberty, ensuring identical Container-Managed Transaction behavior across 350+ transactional methods
Configure Liberty server.xml including JNDI bindings, DataSource, LDAP security, and EJB compatibility features
Upgrade Java 8 application code to Java 11 and subsequently Java 21, resolving removed API dependencies (JAXB, javax.activation, internal access)
Validate 9,308 SQL queries against Oracle 19c, identify and resolve performance regressions using SQL Plan Baselines and optimizer parameter control
Replace Flux 7.11.3 batch scheduler with Spring Batch + Quartz, migrating 67 scheduled jobs with parallel-run validation
Upgrade third-party libraries including iText 1.3 to OpenPDF 2.x, JasperReports 1.0.1 to 7.x, Commons HttpClient 3.x to 5.x, and Commons Collections 2.1 to 4.5.x
Recompile and validate C/JNI native code on RHEL 9.4
Work with DBA to profile and tune 217 stored procedures (120,887 lines PL/SQL) during Oracle migration
Resolve IBM-specific code dependencies (com.ibm.ws.webservices, WAS deployment descriptors)
Implement OpenWebStart and jpackage-based client delivery to replace Java Web Start
Required Skills

Skill Requirements

Must Have:8+ years Java enterprise development (Java 8 through 17+)
Strong experience with EJB (2.x and 3.x), Container-Managed Transactions, JNDI
IBM WebSphere Application Server administration and configuration
IBM Liberty or Open Liberty migration experience
Oracle Database — SQL tuning, EXPLAIN PLAN analysis, PL/SQL reading comprehension
JDBC, connection pooling, DataSource configuration
Spring Framework (Core, JdbcTemplate, Batch)
Experience migrating legacy Java applications (javax → jakarta, removed APIs)
Linux/RHEL system administration basics (shell scripting, service management)
Git, CI/CD pipelines (Azure DevOps preferred)
Strongly Preferred:Previous Oracle upgrade experience (11g/12c → 19c) with performance regression remediation
SQL Plan Baselines, AWR reports, optimizer parameter tuning
Quartz Scheduler or Spring Batch job development
JNI/native code integration (C libraries, shared objects)
SOAP web services (JAX-WS, Axis)
iText/OpenPDF or JasperReports
Cognos BI integration
Application security (LDAP, role-based access, code signing)
Nice to Have:Flux job scheduler experience
HDF5/NetCDF scientific data formats
Boeing or aerospace domain experience
PKCS11 code signing
Jersey 1.x to JAX-RS 2.0 migration

Compensation and Benefits

A candidate’s pay within the range will depend on their skills, experience, education, and other factors permitted by law. This role may also be eligible for performance-based bonuses subject to company policies.
